Lift certification is mandatory. All lifts, old and new, must now by law have a certificate confirming their safety, which must be renewed periodically.
The Elevator Certification Act applies to both multi-family and single-family homes, commercial buildings, and more. The first certification is given with the installation of the lift and lasts for 6 years. All lifts should be re-checked and their certification renewed by a Notified Certification Body every 1 to 6 years depending on the use of the building. Otherwise, severe penalties are foreseen.
